Enjoy the Outdoors Without the Bugs

East Tennessee evenings are made for sitting outside, right up until the mosquitoes find you. A screen room gives you fresh air, mountain breezes and the sound of a summer storm without the bugs, pollen or blowing leaves. Smoky Mountain Deck Builders designs and builds custom screen rooms that look like they belong to your home, whether that’s a new deck and screen room built together, a screened enclosure on your existing deck or an upgrade to an older screened porch that’s seen better days.

Screen Room Styles and Materials

Cedar screen rooms

Cedar brings natural warmth and pairs beautifully with a tongue-and-groove ceiling. Its natural oils help it resist decay and insects in our humid climate. We’ve built western red cedar screen rooms under shed-gable roofs in the Farragut area, including one built alongside a new deck, a fire pit and a concrete grill pad.

Aluminum screen rooms

Powder-coated aluminum framing is strong, rust-resistant and nearly maintenance-free. It’s our go-to for homeowners who want clean lines and less upkeep. Recent aluminum screen rooms around Lenoir City were finished with a single-slope shingled roof on one home and a corrugated metal roof on another, and we’ve rebuilt an aging aluminum screen room in Maryville.

Roof and ceiling choices

Your screen room can have a shingled roof matched to the house, a metal roof or a design that ties into a covered deck. Inside, a cedar ceiling hides the wiring for fans and lights and gives the room a finished, cabin-like feel.

Features That Make It a Room You’ll Use

  • Ceiling fans and lighting for comfort and evening use
  • Optional retractable walls so you can open up on perfect days and close in when the wind picks up
  • Heating options like infrared or propane heaters for cool fall nights
  • Low-maintenance composite flooring from Trex, TimberTech or Deckorators
  • Screen doors and stairs placed where you actually walk

Screen Room or Sunroom?

A screen room is enclosed with mesh screens, so air moves freely while bugs and debris stay out. A sunroom is fully enclosed with glass and insulated, which makes it more like an addition to the house. Screen rooms cost less and are ideal for most of the year in Tennessee, and with fans, heaters and retractable walls they can stay comfortable well beyond summer. Some homeowners later convert a screened deck into a sunroom, and it’s something we’ve done for past clients.

Will a Screen Room Add Value?

A well-built screen room adds livable, comfortable space for dining, lounging or even working from home, all while you stay connected to the view. In scenic areas like Knoxville and the lake communities around it, that kind of bug-free outdoor space is a feature buyers notice. Just as important, it’s a room you’ll use nearly every day.

Planning Your Screen Room

Can you screen in my existing deck?

Often, yes. We check whether your deck’s framing and footings can support walls and a roof. If they can’t, we’ll recommend reinforcement or a rebuild so your screen room lasts.

Permits and timeline

Screen rooms with roofs usually need a building permit, and we handle it for you. Most outdoor projects take 3 to 8 weeks from the start of construction, depending on size, materials and weather.

What affects cost?

Size, framing material (cedar or aluminum), roof style, ceiling finish, electrical work, flooring and whether the deck underneath needs work all affect the price. Your proposal and 3D rendering show the design and price together, and financing options are available.

Screen Room FAQ

Can I use my screen room year-round in Tennessee?

With ceiling fans for summer, heaters for cooler months and retractable walls to block wind, many homeowners use their screen rooms through most of the year.

Cedar or aluminum?

Cedar gives a warm, natural look and pairs well with wood ceilings. Aluminum is lower maintenance with a clean, modern profile. We’ll help you choose based on your home’s style and how much upkeep you want.

Can you build a new deck and screen room together?

Yes, and it’s often the best approach, because the deck framing is designed from day one to carry the walls and roof.
