Shade, Structure and Style for Your Backyard
A pergola does something special to a backyard. It frames the view, defines a place to gather and softens the afternoon sun without closing you in. Add string lights, a ceiling fan or a climbing vine and it becomes the spot everyone drifts toward. Smoky Mountain Deck Builders designs and builds custom pergolas and arbors for patios, decks, pool areas and garden paths across Knoxville and East Tennessee, and you’ll see your design in a 3D rendering before construction begins.
Pergolas vs. Arbors
Pergolas are larger, open-roofed structures that shade a dining area, lounge, hot tub or walkway. Arbors are smaller and more intimate. They usually sit over a garden gate or path and create a welcoming transition from one part of the yard to another. Both give climbing plants like roses and vines something to grow on, and both add architectural interest that makes a yard feel organized and inviting.
Materials That Handle Tennessee Weather
Cedar
Cedar is a favorite for pergolas here. Its natural oils help it resist moisture, decay and insects, and its rich color and grain look right at home against stone, pavers and mountain views. It can weather to a soft silver-gray or be sealed to keep its original tone.
Pressure-treated wood
Pressure-treated lumber is treated to resist rot and pests. It’s durable and budget-friendly and takes paint or stain well.
Powder-coated aluminum and vinyl
For the lowest maintenance, powder-coated aluminum is strong, lightweight and rust-resistant, and it usually needs nothing more than a rinse. Vinyl resists fading, cracking and warping and never needs paint or stain.
Ways to Customize Your Pergola
- Roof options: open slats for dappled sun, retractable coverings for adjustable shade or a solid metal roof for real rain protection
- Ceiling fans and lighting: built-in lighting for evening ambience, plus fans for summer comfort
- Privacy screens: seclusion without losing airflow or light
- Integrated seating: built-in benches that turn the pergola into a gathering spot
- Freestanding or attached: set it in the yard over a patio or attach it to your deck or house
Pergolas We’ve Built Around East Tennessee
A few recent examples show how flexible a pergola can be:
- Rockwood: a freestanding western red cedar pergola with a metal roof and ceiling fan, part of a backyard project that also included a new patio, a flagstone walkway, a stone wood-burning fire pit and a stacked-stone kitchenette.
- Maryville: a pergola with a ceiling fan paired with an outdoor fireplace, creating a cozy gathering area.
- Composite deck and cedar pergola combinations: homeowners often pair a new composite deck, a cedar pergola and a paver patio with a walkway into one complete backyard makeover.
Pergola or Screen Room?
A pergola gives you shade and style while keeping the sky open. A screen room gives you a roof, walls and bug protection. If you want full rain coverage but an open-air feel, a covered deck might be the sweet spot. Our blog post, Screen Room vs. Pergola, walks through the trade-offs.
Planning Your Pergola
Where should it go?
Think about where you already gather, where the afternoon sun hits hardest and what view you want to frame. Pergolas work beautifully over patios, beside pools, on decks and next to an outdoor kitchen or fire pit.
Permits
Permit requirements depend on the size, location and whether the pergola has a solid roof or attaches to the house. We handle any permitting as part of our design-build process.
What affects cost?
Size, material, roof type, footings, lighting and electrical work, and whether the pergola is part of a larger patio or deck project all shape the price. Your proposal and 3D rendering show the design and price together, and financing options are available.

Pergola FAQ
Does a pergola provide full shade?
A traditional slatted pergola gives partial shade. For more coverage, add a retractable covering or a solid metal roof.
Can a pergola go on top of my deck?
Often, yes, if the deck framing can support it. We’ll check during the site visit and recommend reinforcement if needed.
Can you add a fan or lights?
Yes. Ceiling fans, LED lighting and outlets are common additions, and we plan the wiring into the design.
